As introduction to coding I introduce the concept of conditional formatting. Its a very quick way to get across to students the concept of setting a rule, action or command that returns a result. Using Excel formulas is also good; if(statements) but conditional formatting allows for a more graphic approach.

- Bruce Fuda: I do like the way this is very visual – and you could take it to the next level and have them come up with an algorithm that will generate the image based on some set of mathematical rules. A nice way, for example, to see the fibonacci sequence in action, or for more experienced students to “see” the recursion evident in fractal designs.
