Liam Waldie▸ Digital Technologies in Society (Task 2)

Free Language Education App. I first started using this app as a means of exploring another language (Spanish and more recently Japanese) and the concept of 'badging' in education. The app itself it set out beautifully, and challenges you to meet your daily goals in order to progress and successfully learn a range of words, phrases and language conventions in a range of dialects. I later found out that the app had a feature I didn't know about, that everyone who uses this app is actually contributing to a larger collaborative community project via it's users… This TED talk explains this much better.

"After re-purposing CAPTCHA so each human-typed response helps digitize books, Luis von Ahn wondered how else to use small contributions by many on the Internet for greater good. In this talk, he shares how his ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions learn a new language while translating the web quickly and accurately — all for free." Massive-scale online collaboration
