Classroom Experience

When implementing basic programming using a general purpose programming language, the biggest hurdle is getting students to understand that the exact syntax is critical to success. Using (){}[];: is completely new to most students and they have never been exposed to the importance of these characters in programming. Linking these to the debugging and fixing process, using 2 or three lines of code is an easy way to explain the characters use in terms of the program working. Once the students grasp this concept moving forward becomes much simpler. I tend to introduce this concept as soon as possible as it forms a foundation to build on.

Learning any language is difficult so it is nice to see that a few basic hints with syntax can help students develop their understanding of a code language.
